Reading historical fiction is one of my favorite pastimes. I prefer biographical fiction or novels where an historic event is the focus rather than the backdrop. I don’t like alternate history. The history and the people who once lived should be as true to history as possible given the available sources. I appreciate historical notes in the back of a book where an author explains what s/he changed and why.
Why the emphasis on accuracy? Not only did I grow up the daughter of a historian, I am a professional researcher. I work for a large national law firm, where I ran a Web site that, amongst other things, gained recognition for advising people on how to assess quality in information. So, the importance of historical accuracy to me may be a job hazard. It’s certainly in my genes.
